Solar energy panels refer to the device that has the ability to convert photons of light from the sun into
electric current. Technically speaking, these devices are also called photovoltaic panels or modules since
they use photovoltaic effect to generate electric current.

The effect causes the electrons in the panel to become
excited. After that, the electrons are directed into an electric current. In
turn, electricity is produced. And this implies that power is generated to light up a home.
The production of electricity through solar energy starts with the
sun. From the sun, the panel absorbs the light, which is composed of energy particles known as photons.
The light is then converted into electricity to power electrical loads. Since the source comes from the sun,
the energy produced by solar panels is renewable, clean and ecologically safe. This energy can be used in
different applications such as telecommunications, equipment, and remote power systems.
However, solar panels have a long history. It dated
back more than 100 years ago that the solar energy development had begun. In the past, solar energy was used
specifically for steam production. The evolution begun after Henri Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic
effect that allows conversion of sunlight into electric energy. In the year 1893, Charles Frittz used the
discovery of Becquerel to create the first solar cell. And so, the solar cell evolution had
begun.
Around 1941, Russel Ohl patented the first silicon solar cell in
the world. From Ohl’s invention, the first solar panel in 1954 was produced. Then, the solar panels
were manufactured for space satellites. In 1970, new calculators that are powered by the sun were
produced. Even as of now, solar power calculators are manufactured and used around the world. Through
the development of solar panels, solar energy homes were conceptualized and implemented. Now, there are homes
and commercial buildings that use solar energy to generate electric current.
Typically, solar panels are mounted on the roof, where the sun will
have a direct hit. With enough roof area, there will be sufficient number of solar panels that can supply all
the power needs of the entire household.
As of today, solar panels are the most practical method to save
electrical current. Usually, remote areas such as cabins benefit from solar power systems. These
systems do not require electric utility poles and electric cables. Thus, installation fees for these
equipments are slashed out.
Furthermore, solar energy panels demand less maintenance. As
long as they are properly installed and maintained, then these panels will last for
decades.
And since they do not produce any harmful elements,
solar energy panels reduce the pressure exerted on the atmosphere by greenhouse
gases.
